Punta Arenas (Sandy Point), the southernmost city in Chile...
On the guided city tour you will visit the historical city of Punta Arenas, which will make us evoke the adventures and experiences of its pioneers. Punta Arenas (Sandy Point) was the first human settlement that has remained permanently in the Austral Patagonia. It is the southernmost city in Chile. It was founded in 1848 as a small military settlement and evolved through the 19th century into an important port and center for wool production. The sheep barons of the time built tremendous mansions that today are national monuments. You will go to the highest point of Punta Arenas, the lookout "Cerro de la Cruz." From there you have a beautiful view of the whole town and the Strait of Magellan. Then, you will visit an interesting museum and also the local cemetery, which is supposed to be the most beautiful one of Chile. The visit to the Plaza de Armas with its old mansions of the upper class of the 19th century, must be included as well. The palace-like houses of the families Braun-Menendez and Nogueira tell stories of the past richness of Punta Arenas, at the times of the Cape-Horn shipping. A statue of Hernando de Magellanes at the plaza greets all the sailors (according to a local custom those who rub his big toe will return to Punta Arenas).
