Highlights

The National Park Torres del Paine covers 181,000 hectares and it is an absolute must when visiting Patagonia. Snow-capped mountain peaks, cascading rivers and waterfalls, glaciers and mirrored lakes: in all respects Torres del Paine National Park deserves its reputation. It is a world biosphere reserve and has a huge variety of plant and animal species. The most famous peaks of the park are called the ‘Cuernos’ (horns) and ‘Torres’ (towers) of Paine. The Torres del Paine National Park and its surroundings contain four types of vegetation: the pre-Andean bushes at the side of lakes and rivers; the Magellan forest composed of Nothofagus genus species; the Magellan tundra, typified by the presence of crooked shrubs, plant cushions and pastures, and a great amount of vegetation in the forests, which disappear as the height increases. There are 25 species of mammal in Torres del Paine including Pumas, Cougars, Grey foxes, Patagonian foxes, Skunks, the Chilean Huemul and many Guanacos running wild. There is also 105 species of bird including fifteen birds of prey alone like the Andean Condor, Black-chested Buzzard Eagle, Rufous-tailed Hawk, Cinereous Harrier, Chimango Caracara, Magellanic Owl and Austral Pygmy Owl. Other species include: Rheas, Black-neck swans, Flamingos, Raguas, Caiquenes, Escurridzos, Nandues, Striped Woodpecker, Magellanic Woodpecker, Magellan Goose and Buff-necked Ibis. You will see the most important spots of the Park like Milodon Cave and the Amarga lagoon which was studied for its chemical, biological and physical features. You can enjoy the beautiful panoramic views of the Paine mountain range and you may be lucky and see some red foxes and condors. Admire the Nordenskjold and Pehoé lakes and enjoy a short hike to the Salto Grande waterfall. You will walk along the stunning area of the glaciers, with ice floes of the Grey Glacier walking through forests of lengas. Overnight and dinner in a middle class hotel in Puerto Natales.
