Wonderful Greenland

Be spellbound by the contrasts on display in the kingdom of icebergs and Inuits.

Greenland

A pristine wilderness of rugged mountains and awe-inspiring fjords, lush green valleys and incredible wildlife, where some of the most active glaciers on Earth and icebergs the size of cathedrals plays out a tableau of breathtaking beauty across a timeless landscape. Blessed with a rich vein of natural and cultural diversity, this spectacular frozen world offers a fascinating insight into a history and culture that has thrived in these harsh realms for millennia.

Greenland’s inland ice cap is more than 14 times the size of England and along the coast the mighty iceberg formations are constantly changing.

Through generations the Inuits have formed their own distinctive way of life. Arts & crafts, traditional drum dance, kayak performances and colourful national costumes are all cultural expressions that are very much alive today.

Journey Onboard

Journeying aboard the superbly equipped MS Fram we explore the dramatic Arctic coastline, from the sparsely populated extremes of the northwest, through to the lush rich valleys of its southern seas. We will visit traditional coastal communities like Sisimiut and Qaanaaq and sail through the spectacular waters of Disko Bay, where gigantic sculptures of ice and snow reflect the dazzling rays of the Midnight Sun. We will discover abandoned whaling stations and ancient Inuit burial grounds, take in the captivating majesty of the Ilulissat Icefjord and search out the leviathans of the deep.

With on board lectures and an opportunity to explore the island’s remarkable landscapes on foot, by boat and even helicopter, these exhilarating voyages offer the chance for true adventure and exploration.

South & West Greenland, May
A touch of Iceland in addition to the beautiful Disko area with its impressive glaciers, fjords and clear waters. We arrive Greenland by ship. The landscape in the south is lush, and the capital Nuuk is situated here. We are sailing in the wake of Eirik Raude. The Norwegian Viking who emigrated from Iceland to Greenland.

Disko Bay – The heart of Greenland
Disko Bay, on Greenland’s west coast, brings you close to ice bergs and impressive mountain formations. We visit local settlements and villages and experience the inuits unique culture, history and way of life. One of the highlights of this trip is the UNESCO World Heritage site the Jakobshavn glacier, near Ilulissat.

Disko Bay & Thule
Experience the beautiful Disko Bay and the northern region of Greenland. We try to reach 80ºN, and might catch sight of polar bears. In Siorapaluk, we visit the northernmost native settlement in the world. The lectures and landings will focus on hunting culture.

Greenland, Labrador, Newfoundland, New York
Greenland, Canada and USA - we are visiting both the Western and the Eastern Viking Settlements of Greenland as well at the famous site of L’Anse aux Meadows where Leiv Eriksson first landed in North America.

Operations
We have our own charter flight operation to Greenland, and we use local guides, lecturers and suppliers.

Landings/learning
Our landings in Greenland are exciting and safe. They include settlements, beautiful sites and places of historical interest. The use of PolarCircle boats makes it possible to do a wide range of landings. Our expedition teams are experienced with in-depth knowledge of the areas we sail in. They will conduct lectures on topics such as biology, history and geology throughout the course of the trip.

MS Fram
MS Fram is one of the world’s most sophisticated explorer vessels with high standard and comfort. Stabilizers, Ice class 1A/1B, Internet access and satellite telephone, fitness room and outdoor Jacuzzi.  There are large public areas, a spacious observation lounge and outdoor areas on deck 5 and 7. This gives a unique possibility to see nature up-close. The atmosphere on board is informal and relaxed.

Climate & Temperatures

Although Greenland has an Arctic climate (which means the average temperature never exceeds 10°C in one month), the summers are relatively mild particularly in areas sheltered from wind. Inside the fjords the temperatures can reach up to 20°C.

Midnight Sun

The majority of Greenland lies above the Arctic Circle and therefore benefits from the Midnight Sun during the summer. This means 24 hours of sunlight to experience this unique landscape from the end of May to the end of July.
