Hurtigruten Winter

Join us in hunting the Aurora Borealis, a major element of the winter journey, making an expedition along the coast of Norway a truly enchanting experience..

Winter & the Northern Lights

In the winter, the sun is low on the horizon and, north of the Arctic Circle, can even be below the horizon for some weeks. This natural phenomenon creates a fascinating light. You can never know when the Aurora Borealis, the Northern Lights, will appear, but sailing with Hurtigruten will provide the best possibilities to experience the magic colour show from light green to dark purple flickering across the Arctic sky.

December
We celebrate a traditional Norwegian Christmas and New Year on board.

January to March
The sun returns in the north and the famous winter fishing in Lofoten goes on in these cold, fresh months.

Explore the Arctic Scenery

Unlock the wonders of the Arctic north with special shore excursions. Spend an unforgettable night in a snow hotel. Embark on a snowmobile safari in Lapland. Thrill to the action of dog sledging on the island of Kvaløya. Whatever the activity, you are in the middle of spectacular winter scenery.

Why the worlds most beautiful voyage during winter

The Arctic lights
Arctic blue, icy white, fiery yellow, mother of pearl, and the fascinating Aurora Borealis (Northern lights). In the north the sun is leaving and returning.

The winter landscape
It is beautiful, pure and extremely varied.

The air
The air is fresh, clean, pure and crisp.

Sailing far, far north
We sail far above the Arctic Circle. The coast of Norway is one of few places in the world where this is possible in wintertime, due to ice free ports as a result of the Gulf Stream.

Hunting the Lights (Nov 15 - Mar 31)

The term “Hunting the Light” originates from one of our captains. He had observed guests out on deck chasing the most magical of all natural phenomena; the Northern Lights. “Hunting the Light” is a signature of Hurtigruten’s winter voyages, hunting and experiencing the many and beautiful types of light visible during the winter months.
