Enjoy a guided tour through the historical capital of Norway. Trondheim is beautifully situated by the Trondheimsfjord. With the Nid River meandering through the city center, it is surrounded by water on all sides. The history of the city has played an important role in the development of the country from the Viking age and medieval times, in which many of the popular attractions bear witness. The Norwegian Viking King Olav Tryggvason established the city in 997, and the original name of Trondheim was ‘Nidaros’.
Trondheim is a large city by Norwegian standards, though it has still managed to preserve much of the charm and intimacy of a small town. It is also a city full of contrasts, with monastery ruins, colorful wooden buildings and wharves, and a beautiful red-painted city bridge dating back to 1861. Trondheim is home to a world famous research and educational community, modern sports facilities and a lively night life. On this tour, you will hear about the city’s many features as the bus takes us through Trondheim’s streets, neighborhoods, and highlights, including a short stop at Utsikten (the View) to admire the city from a high elevation.
DISCOVER THE NIDAROS CATHEDRAL, NORWAY’S NATIONAL SHRINE
The Nidaros Cathedral towers over the town, and was built over the burial place of St. Olav, the patron saint of Norway. The building of Norway’s national sanctuary began in 1070. Nidaros Cathedral displays beautiful stained glass from the 19th and the 20th centuries, and the statues and ornaments on the west side of the cathedral are also a great attraction. After a guided tour around the cathedral, you will soon understand why many describe it as the most beautiful religious building in Norway.
