Underneath the Longyear Glacier there is a hidden world of caves and passages, glittering snow crystals, and icicles. This isone of the few places in the world where it's possible to get underneath a glacier in the wintertime.
Through the heart of the glacier
You get equipped with a headlamp, and then enter this fascinating place. The entrance to the cave is tight so you have to sit down and slide down a steep 10 – 13 feet to drop into a large grotto. The temperature inside the cave is -3°C/ 27°F, while the Arctic winter temperature outside is much colder. As you move inward you will see that the ceilings are covered with icicles and lacy snow crystals glittering in the light of the headlamps. The ice and rock formations are astonishing – a crystal world that will take your breath away. We will provide headlights, helmets, and experienced guides. You only need solid winter shoes, waterproof outdoor clothing, and a spirit of adventure!
