Hurtigruten is pleased to announce it will be offering a cruise with Dr. Terje I. Leiren, acting chair of Scandinavian Studies and Sverre Arestad Endowed Chair in Norwegian Studies at the University of Washington. He will accompany travelers on the Hurtigruten route, giving lectures and other information on vikings on the northbound voyage and on World War II in Norway on the way south, from Kirkenes to Bergen. The opportunity to travel with a renowned expert in the field of Norwegian studies is one that does not present itself often, so if you're interested, call to book your cruise today.

Dr. Leiren's activities

In addition to his teaching career at the University of Washington, where he gives classes in the Scandinavian Studies department and upper-level Norwegian language and culture, Dr. Leiren has a busy academic career. He is one of the editors of the New Directions in Scandinavian Studies series from the University of Washington Press, a set of books that aims to offer new and broad approaches to Scandinavian cultures and their interactions with North America. Under the rubric of the series, Scandinavian studies include the Baltic states and Scandinavian cultures in America.

Dr. Leiren has also been a lecturer and host on tours before, often on behalf of the UW Alumni Association's UW Alumni Tours and with the Smithsonian Institution. He has been involved in tours to Norway before, as well as to Greenland, Iceland, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Ireland, Scotland, Russia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and more.

His research interests lie mostly in Norwegian studies, particularly in the history and culture of Norway during the 19th and early 20th centuries. He is also interested in Norwegian culture in America during that time. As such, Dr. Leiren is uniquely positioned to give a brilliant tour focusing on World War II in Norway in a way that is intelligible and relatable to an American audience.

Lectures on the cruise

The Norway cruise Dr. Leiren will be on includes special lectures from him, as well as the usual excursions and natural beauty along the coast of Norway. On the 8-day "Remember Heroes of WWII: 70th Anniversary of the End of the War" tour, Dr. Leiren will give two lectures. They will be "Norway, Neutral and Invaded" and "The Norwegian Resistance to German Occupation." These lectures will be complemented by film showings and tours of the very sites mentioned in them.
